As the lone survivor of the rescue mission after his aircraft was shot down, the last thing Staff Sergeant John Decker wanted was the responsibility for a hundred odd, soft as putty, no-nothing, weepy females. His mission was to retrieve an important package and get it to a secret military base in northern California. He was hundreds of miles inside alien held territory with no heavy weapons, no support, no Intel on the aliens, and no way to report the mission was a bust. Between him and the secret base stood the Sierra Nevada Mountain, four hundred miles of treacherous road and an unknown number of world destroying aliens.

Description

Any transport was immidiately attacked and destroyed, so the only way to get there was to walk. To even think about taking these women on a four hundred mile yomp was crazy at best, and completely insane knowing winter would catch them before they reached their goal. But ever the perennial sheepdog he didn’t have a choice. It was either leave them to their fate, or take them with him. The only way to do that was to teach them. Not only survive, but to turn these inexperienced civilians into a snarling, battle hardened ‘Wolf Pack’, willing and able to take down the assorted bad guys and aliens that stood in their path. In the SAS, he’d done some crazy thing, and if there was a kindly God who looked after little children, fools and village idiots, John ‘Wolfman’ Decker hoped he was paying special attention right about now, because he was the biggest village idiot of them all.

Aliens attack, a rescue mission fails. One man survive a STL crash. This man, an SAS Sergeant carries on the mission alone. And this novel I couldn’t put down, well written. I will excitedly await the next installment

Decker is about as real as any military special operations member as can be and the motivation that real solders feel.

Lots of action in this new series by Rob Buckman. What’s a soldier to do when he has to go 500 miles through hostile territory with over 100 females. Yep, train them to fight. Suburb writing and a great story.

Better than most space opera/TEOTWAWKI/military science fiction.

Over many decades I’ve probably read hundreds of examples of military science fiction, TEOTWAWKI, and space opera stories, and this story is one of the better examples.

Not particularly complex or deep–but, if it was, it wouldn’t be space opera, would it? Good, not too unrealistic plot, good character development, a twist I haven’t seen before, and a lot of action.

As well, I liked the protagonist.

I’m hoping that this series will continue.

Different sort of book than Mr. Buckman has written in the past. Along the same lines as ‘Heart of Stone’ series it is a much more gruff and graphic novel with very adult language and situations. It was intriguing but not what I expected. I don’t know I’m kind of indecisive at the moment. I really liked ‘He who dares’ and his other early works and have waited for book 4 of the series for quite some time. Maybe if I reread it I’ll have a different opinion
